P1.6 Red Shift and Big Bang Flashcards
What is red shift?
The increasing of the wavelenth of light as a galaxy is moving away from us.
We see a red-shirt from most galaxies.
What does the red shift tell us about galaxies?
The further away the galaxies are the bigger the red shift.
The further away galaxies are the faster they are moving.
What is the cosmic microwave background radiation?
CMBR is a form of electromagnetic radiation filling the universe.
How does the cosmic microwave background radiation support the big bang theory?
It is evidence of the large explosion at the start of time.
What is the big bang theory?
The ‘big bang’ theory says that the universe began from a very small initial point.
How does red shift support the big bang theory?
Red shift from galaxies provides evidence that the universe is expanding.
An expanding universe must have originates from a very small initial point.
