The Penis Flashcards
What are the two main functions of the penis?
Sexual intercourse- becomes engorged with blood forming an erection. Semen can they be mixed with seminal fluid adn ejaculated through the external uretthra orifice
Micturition- carries urine from the bladder to the external urethral orifice where it is expelled
What is found in the structure of the penis?
Root- proximal fixed part of the penis
Body- free part of the penis, located between the roots and the glans
Glans- most distal part of the penis, has a coned shape and is formed by corpus spongiosum
What are the three forms of erectile tissue?
What is the name of the tissue that makes them up?
Left and right crura (Crus)- corpus cavernosa
bulb- corpus spongiosum
What are the four muscles of the penis?
What are their actions?
Bulbospongiosus- associated with the bulb of the penis.Contracts to empty the spongy urethra of any residual semen and urine.
Ischiocavernosus- surround the left and right crura of the penis, force blood into the cavernous spaces maintaining erection
What are the fascial coverings of the penis?
Each mass of erectile tissue has two coverings,
Superficial layer- external fascia of Colles
the deep fascia lies under this which holds together the erectile tissues
Underneath this fascia is a strong fascia called tunica albuginea. The incomplete septum between the two corpora is comprised of tunica albuginea
What are the ligaments of the penis?
Suspensory ligament- connects erctile bodies to pubic symphysis
Fundiform ligament- Runs from linea alba (abdominal wall) surrounds the penis like a sling and attaches it to the pubic symphysis
Where does the penis get its blood supply?
Where does the blood of the penis drain?
internal peduendal arteries:
Dorsal arteries of the penis
Deep arteries of the penis
Bulbourethral artery
deep dorsal vein of the penis and superficial dorsal veins
How is the penis innervated?
By S2-S4 spinal cord segments and spinal ganglia. Sensory adn sympathetic innervation to the skin and glans penis is supplied by the dorsal nerve of the penis, a branch of the pudendal nerve.
