Fallopian tubes and ovaries Flashcards

1
Q

What are the fallopian tubes?

What is their function

What adaptations do they have to carry out this function?

A

Muscular J shaped tubes that opens in the abdomen next to the ovaries. They run into the uterus

Transport of ovum from ovaries to uterus

Inner ciliated columnar epithelial cells
Smooth muscle layer to contract. Very sensitive to oestrogen and therefore more contractions when oestrogen levels are high

Q

What are the divisions of the Fallopian tubes

A

(Distal to proximal)

Fimbriae- finger like ciliated projections which capture the ovum
Infundibulum- funnel shaped opening
Ampulla- long, wide section of the fallopian tubes. fertilisation usually occurs here
Isthmus- narrow section of the uterine tubes connecting the ampulla to the uterine cavity

Q

What is the arterial supply to the fallopian tubes

What is the venous drainage to the fallopian tubes

What is the lymphatic drainage of the fallopian tubes

What innervates the fallopian tubes?

A

Uterine and ovarian arteries

Uterine and ovarian arteries

Iliac, sacral and aortic lymph nodes

Pelvic plexus (T11-L1) (sympathetic and parasympathetic)

Q

What is salpingitis?

What is an ectopic pregnancy

A

Inflamamtion of the fallopian tunes due to a bacterial infection. Causes mucosal adhesion which block the fallopian tubes leading to infertility or ectopic pregnancy
