Sacral plexus Flashcards
What is the sacral plexus?
Netwrok of nerve fibres that supply the skin and muscles of the pelvis and lower limb. Located on the surface of the posterior pelvic wall.
Formed from anterior rami of S1-S4, also receives contributions from L4 and L5
What are the branches of the sacral plexus?
What are the final destinations of the branches?
Superior gluteal nerve Inferior gluteal nerve Sciatic nerve Posterior femoral cutaneous Pudendal
Greater sciatic foramen- innervate gluteal region
Remain in pelvis- pelvic muscle
What happens to the superior gluteal nerve
What are its roots?
What are it’s motor functions?
Exits through greater sciatic foramen
roots L4,L5,S1,
innervates gluteus minimus and medius
What happens to the inferior gluteal nerve
What are its roots
What are its motor functions?
Leaces via greater sciatic foramen
L5,S1,S2
Innervates gluteus maximus
What are the roots of the sciatic nerve?
What is its motor function?
What is its sensory function?
L4-S3
Innervates posterior compartmetns of thigh
All muscles in the interior and extensor compartment of the leg
Posterolateral,medial and sole of foot
Anterolateral surface of leg and dorsal foot
What is the course of the posterior femoral cutaneous
What are its roots
What are its sensory functions?
Leaves the pelvis via the greater sciatic foramen, entering the gluteal region inferiorly to the piriformis muscle
S1,S2,S3
Innervates the skin on the posterior surface of the thigh and leg. Also perineum
What is the course of the pudendal nerve
What is it roots
What are its motor functions
What are its sensory functions?
Leaves via the greater sciatic foramen and then re enters through the lesser sciatic foramen.
S2, S3, S4
Skeletal muscle in pelvis bulbospongiosus, ischiocavernous, levator ani, sphincters
Penis,clitoris and most of perineum
What block is given during childbirth
Pudendal nerve block
