The pectoral region Flashcards
3 parts of the sternum
- manubrium
- body
- xiphoid process
jugular notch
indent at top of sternum
clavicular notches
indentations on either side of jugular notch
articular site of clavicle
costal notches
attachments for ribs
sternal angle
angle formed at connection of manubrium and body of sternum
xiphisternal joint
connection of body of sternum to xiphoid process
what are true ribs
ribs which are directly attached to sternum via costal cartilage
what are false ribs
ribs which indirectly attach to sternum via costal cartilage of rib above
what are floating ribs
no costal cartilage attachment to sternum
how many true ribs
1st to 7th rib
how many false ribs
8th to 10th rib
how many floating ribs
11th to 12th rib
functions of the vertebral column
- protects the spinal cord
- supports the body weight
- movement
total number of vertebrae
33
number of cervical vertebrae
7
C1 - C7
number of thoracic vertebrae
12
T1 - T12
number of lumbar vertebrae
5
L1 - L5
number of sacral vertebrae
5
sacrum
number of coccygeal vertebrae
4
coccyx
vertebral body
big chunky bit on anterior side
vertebral foramen
hole posterior to vertebral body
spinous process
protrudes posteriorly
transverse process
protrudes transversally
Pectoralis major
large, fan-shaped, superficial muscle covering superior thorax.
has 2 heads: clavicular and sternocostal
pec major origin
- medial half of clavicle (clavicular head)
- anterior surface of sternum
- upper 7 costal cartilages
- external oblique aponeurosis (sternocostal head)
pec major insertion
- lateral lip of intertubercular/bicipital groove
- muscle fibres with superior origin, insert inferior
- muscle fibres with more inferior origin, insert superior
pec major innervation
medial and lateral pectoral nerves
pec major action
adduction, medial rotation and flexion of arm at shoulder joint
pec minor origin
surfaces of ribs 3, 4 and 5
deep in pec major
pec minor insertion
coracoid process of the scapula
pec minor innervation
medial pectoral nerve
pec minor action
- draws scapula forward and down
- assists in raising ribs during inspiration
serratus anterior origin
external lateral surfaces of ribs 1-8/9
serratus anterior insertion
anterior surface of the medial border of the scapula
serratus anterior innervation
long thoracic nerve
serratus anterior action
- fixes scapula against the thoracic wall
- assists in lateral rotation of the scapula allowing arm to be raised over 90 degrees
subclavius origin
junction of 1st rib and its costal cartilage
subclavius insertion
subclavian groove of clavicle
subclavius innervation
nerve to subclavius
subclavius action
draws clavicle down and forward
stabilises sternoclavicular joint
