The Nervous System And The Eye Flashcards
What does the nervous system enable humans to do
It enables humans to react to their surroundings and co-ordinate their behaviour
Where is information from receptors passed to
The central nervous system
What does the central nervous system co-ordinate
The response of effectors for example muscles contracting are glands secreting hormones
What are reflex actions
Automatic and rapid so they can protect the body they do not involve the conscious part of the brain
What are the steps of a reflex action
The pain stimulus is detected by the receptors
impulses from the receptive pass along a sensory neuron to the central nervous system
An impulse then passes through a relay neuron
Motor neurone carries an impulse to the effector
the effector usually a muscle response for example to withdraw a limb away from the source of pain
How do neurones communicate with each other
They are not directly connected to each other so they communicate with each other via synapses are gaps between the neurons
What does the brain control
Complex behaviour
What is the brain made up of
Billions of interconnected neurones and has different regions that carry out different functions
