Human Defence Against Disease R Flashcards
What are all of the non specific defences against diseas in the human body
Tears
Nose
Glands in stomach wall
Hair
Skin
Throat
How do tears defend against diseases
Tears have enzymes in which destroy pathogens
How does the nose protect from pathogens
The nose traps particles that may contain pathogens
How does the throat protect from pathogens
The cicilia creates a wave motion which sweeps mucus along the sheets of mucus then trap particles and bacteria
How does the glands in the stomach wall protect from pathogens
Glands produce hydrochloric acid, which kills bacteria in food
How does skin and hair protect from pathogens
They both secret the sebaceous gland which kills bacteria and fungi
What do white blood cells perform to protect f on pathogens
Phagocytosis
What is phagocytosis
The process involves the pathogen being surrounded, engulfed and digested
How do antigens and antibodies work
Antigens are markers on the surface of the microorganism l.white blood cells then become sensitised to the antigens and produce antibodies
The antibodies lock onto the antigens.this causes the microorganisms to clump together,so that other white blood cells can digest them
What are anti toxins
Chemicals that neutralise the poisonous effects of toxins
