The Brain And The Eye Flashcards
What are the three main regions in the brain
The cerebral cortex the cerebellum and the medulla
What does the cerebral cortex do and what is it responsible for
It is responsible for the conscience, intelligence, memory and language
What is the cerebellum responsible for
It coordinates movement and balance
What does the medulla do
It’s controls automatic captions such as heartbeat and breathing
How do neuro scientists study and learn about the brain
By studying patients with brain damage electrically stimulating different parts of the brain and using MRI scans
What kind of organ is the eye
It is a sense organ
What are all the important parts of the eye
The retina the optic nerve the sclera the cornea the iris the pupil the ciliary muscles and suspensory ligaments
What is the retina
The retina contains receptor cells which are sensitive to the brightness and colour of light
What is the optic nerves job
The optic nerve carries impulses from the retina to the brain
What does the sclera provide
It forms an outer layer with a transparent region at the front called the cornea
What does the iris do
It controls the size of the pupil and the amount of light reaching the retina
What are the two common defects of the eyes, when rays of light do not focus on the retina
Myopia (short sighted) and hyperopia(long sighted)
Generally how how is myopia and hyperopia affect treated and what are other ways to treat them
they are usually treated by spectacle lenses but they could be treated using new technologies like contact lenses laser eye surgery to change the shape of the cornea and replacement eye lenses
