inheritance variation and evolution Flashcards
1
Q
what does asexual reproduction involve
A
-only one parent
- No fusion of gametes,so nomixing of genetic information
- the production of genetically identical offspring (clones)
-mitosis
2
Q
how do straw berries reproduce asexually?
A
they have long shoots called runners in which they send out into the ground and grow a new plant
3
Q
how do daffodils reproduce asexually
A
daffodils have lots of smaller bulbs which grow into new plants
4
Q
how do fungi reproduce asexually
A
through spores
5
Q
what happens when there is cell division in meiosis
A
- copies of the genetic information are made
- the cell divides twice to form four gametes, each with a single set of chromosomes
- all gametes are genetically different form eachother
6
Q
Why is meiosis important?
A
it halves the number of chromosomes in gametes so that there is a correct no. of chromosomes
7
Q
what are the pros of sexual reproducction
A
- it produces variation in offspring
- if the environment changes, any variation means that at least some organisms will be suited and can survive
- It allows humans to selectively breed plants and animals, and increase food production
8
Q
what are the advantages of asexual production
A
- only one parent is needed
- it is more time and energy efficient,as the organism does not need to find a mate
- It is faster than sexual production
- many offspring can be produced to make the best use of good conditions
