The Nervous System Flashcards
What are neurons?
Neurons are nerve cells composed of axon and dendrites.
What is the difference between axons and dendrites?
Dendrites conduct electrical signals toward the cell.
Axons conduct electrical signals away from the cell.
What is a synapse?
A synapse is the point at which a signal from one neuron is passed to another neuron.
What are neuroglia?
Neuroglia are cells that support the neurons help them communicate with one another.
What are nerves?
Nerves are bundles of axons that carry signals to and from the brain.
What is the central nervous system composed of?
The central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord.
What is the peripheral nervous system composed of?
The peripheral nervous system is composed of all the neurons that are involved in receiving information and sending it to the spinal cord and brain.
What does the cerebrum deal with?
The cerebrum deals with higher-level brain functions, such as interpreting signals, learning, reasoning, and memory.
What is gray matter composed of?
Gray matter is composed of the cell bodies of neurons.
What does the Corpus Callosum do?
The Corpus Callosum allows the two hemispheres of the brain to exchange information.
What are the Cerebellum’s functions oriented around?
The Cerebellum’s functions are oriented around muscle movement.
What does the brain stem control?
The brains stem controls the more basic functions of the human body, such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure.
What is the autonomic nervous system?
The autonomic nervous system is the part of the nervous system that takes signals from the CNS to the body’s smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, and glands.
What is the sensory nervous system?
The sensory nervous system is the part of the nervous system that carries signals from the bodies receptors to the CNS.
What is the somatic motor nervous system?
The somatic motor nervous system is the part of the nervous system that carries instructions from the CNS to the skeletal muscles.
