The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous control?
Is a communications network that controls all other systems. There are 2 parts CNS and PNS.
What is the CNS made up of and what does it do?
It is made up of the brain and spinal cord and it is the receiver of information, it processes information and sends messages back.
What is the PNS?
Is a network of nerves that run through out the head, neck and body. It carries messages from the CNS.
What is a nerve cell?
Is made form slots of nerve cells called neuron’s they transmit electrical messages.
What are the 3 types of Nerve Cells?
- Motor neurons
- Connector Neurons
- Sensory Neurons
What does the motor neuron do?
They control the muscles and carry messages from the CNS to sensory neurons that control the muscles movement.
What is the connector neuron?
They transmit messages between neurons.
What are sensory neurons?
They controls the senses e.g. sight, hearing, smell, touch ect
What are the key parts of the brain?
Cerebrum, Cerebellum, Brainstem, Hypothalamus
What does the cerebrum do?
It takes up 80% of the bran and controls your conscious thoughts. There is a left and right side of the cerebrum.
What is the cerebellum?
It is the baby brain and is not as evolved in us as animals. It is located where your skull curves and is responsible for balance.
What is the brain stem?
The lower parts of the stem widens just after it passes into the skull, controls breathing, BP, HR.
What is the hypothalamus?
To maintain homeostasis
