Enzymes Flashcards
What are the 3 main enzymes?
Protease, Amylase and Lipase
What does denaturing enzymes mean?
This is when the active sites of enzymes is altered by heating or blocked by poison. The enzyme wont then function and be denatured.
What do carbs turn into? And what enzyme transforms carbs?
The salivary, lipase and protease amylase enzymes turn carbs into starch and sugars.
What do proteins turn into? And what enzymes transform proteins?
Pepsin, pancreatic protease and gastric juice are the enzymes that turn proteins into peptides and amino acids.
What do lipids turn into? And what enzymes transform lipids?
Intestinal juices and pancreatic lipases turn lipids into fatty acids and glycerol.
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are proteins that catalyse specific chemical reactions without themselves being altered.
What are the 8 features of enzymes?
1.All are proteins
2.All speed up chemical reactions
3.All are reaction specific
4. All are not used up in the reaction
5. Each enzyme work under specific conditions
6. They work by lowering the energy of reaction
7.they work on a locked key principle
8. Work in cofactors and coenzymes
What is the lock key model?
Is a way of showing the specific action of an enzyme with a single substrate.
