The Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous System
brain and spinal cord; breathing, body temp, etc.
Peripheral Nervous System
cranial and spinal nerves; communication lines between the CNS and the rest of the body
Sensory (afferent) division
brings info towards CNS
Motor (efferent) division
takes info away from CNS
Somatic Nervous System
voluntary; skeletal muscles
Autonomic Nervous System
involuntary; cardiac muscles, smooth muscles
Sympathetic division
activates body during activity (adrenaline); and shuts down what doesn’t matter (digestion)…..fight or flight
Parasympathetic division
rest and digest; conserves energy
Neuroglia
supports cells and amplifies signal
Neurons
transmit signals
Astrocytes
part of CNS; creates barriers between blood and CNS; controls chemical environment around neurons
Microglia
part of CNS; immune cells for neurons; absorb debri
Ependymal
part of CNS; at barrier between blood plasma and cerebral spinal fluid; filters blood plasma and produces CSF
Oligodendrocytes
part of CNS; plasma membrane that wraps around axons (myelin sheaths); mostly lipids (doesn’t conduct/polar); insulation allows for info to travel long distances
