Chapter 6a Flashcards
Functions of bones
Support, protection, anchorage, mineral and growth factor storage
Hematopoiesis
Red blood cell formation
Compact bone
Dense outer layer on every bone that appears smooth and solid
Spongy bone
Has a mesh of bony spines called traveculae
Periosteum
Covers outside of compact bone
Endosteum
Covers inside portion of compact bone
What is the shaft of a bone called?
diaphysis
What are the ends of a bone called?
Epiphyses
The epiphyses consist of what?
Compact bone externally and spongy bone internally
How do bones get nutrients?
Nutrient arteries and veins that enter the dysphasis through nutrient foramen openings
Osteoprogenitor cells
Stem cells in the periosteum and endosteum; some turn into osteoblasts
Osteoblasts
Bone-forming cells that secrete unmineralized bone matrix called osteoid (made up of collagen and calcium)
Osteocytes
Mature bone cells in lacunae that no longer divide; maintain bone matrix and act as stress or strain sensors
Which cells osteoblasts and osteoclasts so bone remodeling can occur?
Osteocytes
Osteoclasts
Bone-resorbing cell
