The Microscope/ Staining Flashcards
How do you calculate the total magnification?
Total magnification is achieved by the multiplication of the power of the eyepiece lens by the power of the objective lens.
Example- 10x4= x40
What is an electron microscope and what is the advantages and disadvantages?
The electron microscope uses a beam of electrons Instead of light. An advantage is It is possible to get much larger magnifications. The disadvantages of an electron microscopes is that you could only study dead cells.
Iodine solution
It makes the nucleus more obvious and stains and starch present mostly used to stain plant cells
Methylene blue
Stains acidic parts of the cell blue makes the nucleus more obvious, mostly used to prepare slides of animal cells and bacteria.
How do I calculate magnification of a drawing or picture?
Magnification= length of A-B on picture
Divided by
Real length of A-B
Why are electron microscopes useful
Electron microscopes letters, study cells and much finer detail than light, microscopes, enabling biologist to see and understand more sub cellular structures, such as ribosomes and plasmids
What is the purpose of the fine adjustment knob on a light microscope
It’s used to focus the lens until a clear image of what’s on the slide appears
True or false electron microscopes have a smaller magnification than light microscopes, but they have a higher resolution than light microscopes
False electron microscopes have both a higher resolution and a higher magnification than a light microscope
