The Circulatory System Flashcards
What are the four components of blood?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma
Function of red blood cells
Carry oxygen around the body
Function of white blood cell
Defend the body against pathogens
Function of platelets
Clot the blood
Plasma
Carries dissolved substances
What substances does plasma carry
Plasma also distributes heat around the body
Small soluble, food, molecules like glucose amino acids
Waste chemicals produced by the body, e.g. carbon dioxide for respiration and urea produced by the liver
Hormones, e.g. insulin
Mineral salts, e.g. sodium ions
Function of coronary arteries
Supply oxygen and glucose to the heart muscle without a steady supply of oxygenated blood. The heart muscle couldn’t keep contracting.
What happens if there’s a blood clot in a coronary artery?
The heart muscles won’t get enough oxygen and will stop working. This is a heart attack.
Semi-lunar valves
Prevent backflow of blood from arteries when the ventricles relax
Pulmonary artery
Curry blood from heart to lungs
Superior vena cava
A vein carrying blood from the body to the right atrium
Tricuspid valve
Prevents backflow of blood to the right atrium with the right ventricle contracts
Bicuspid valve
Prevents backflow of blood to the left atrium when the left ventricle contracts
Pulmonary vein
Carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
Aorta
An artery carrying blood to the body
