Effects of smoking in the air passages
Sticky mucus in the lungs, traps pathogens, mucus is normally swept out of the lungs by cilia. However, cigarette smoke chemicals paralyse the cilia leading to buildup of mucus and a smokers cough.
Smoke can also irritate the bronchi causing bronchitis
Effects on the alveoli
Smoke ( carbon monoxide) damages, alveoli walls, reducing the ability of the blood to carry oxygen ( carbon monoxide combines w the haemoglobin) straining the heart, therefore increasing risk of developing coronary, heart, disease, or strokes
Lung conditions due to smoking
Tobacco smoke contains many carcinogens, including tar, smoking increases risk of lung cancer, mouth, cancer, throat and oesophagus cancer
Emphysema
A lung condition that causes shortness of breath due to the alveoli being damaged
