photosynthesis Flashcards
what is photosynthesis
chemical process used by plants to make glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water using light energy
what happens to the glucose produced in photosynthesis
respired to release energy, converted to starch for storage, used to make cellulose proteins and oils
photosynthesis word equation
carbon dioxide plus water equals oxygen plus glucose
what are the limiting factors of photosynthesis
temperature
light intensity
carbon dioxide concentration
light intensity experiment
a light is recorded at different lengths from a photosynthesising plant to vary the intensity it receives
the further it moves from the plant the fewer oxygen bubbles produced
count bubbles or messing volume of oxygen is more accurate
how to test leaf for the presence of starch
heat leaf in boiling water
and leaf to boiling ethanol to dissolve the chlorophyll turning it white
wash leaf
add iodine
leaves w starch present will turn blue/black
the use of sodium hydroxide to absorb carbon dioxide for photosynthesis
sodium hydroxide absorbs and removes co2
plant is left in bag w sodium hydroxide, test leaves w iodine, it won’t turn blue/black bc the plants has not photosynthesised therefore no starch is produced and stored
what does chlorophyll do
absorbs light energy
