The Male Reproductive System - Testes Flashcards
What are gonads?
A gonad is an organ that produces sex cells in animals
What are the male gonads called?
The testes
Where do the testes develop?
They develop inside the body cavity
When do the testes descend from inside the body cavity?
A few weeks before birth they descend out of the body
A few weeks before birth the testes descend from inside the body into what?
They descend into a pouch called the scrotum
What is the scrotum?
The scrotum is the pouch which holds the testes outside the body
At what temperature are the testes kept at inside the scrotum?
They are kept at 35 degrees Celsius
Why do the testes need to be kept at 35 degrees Celsius?
As at this temperature meiosis can occur and producing sperm
Why do the testes need to be kept outside the body?
As meiosis cannot tale place properly in males at normal temperature i.e. 37 degrees Celsius
Sperm production cannot take place at 37 degrees Celsius
What does each testis consist of?
Each consists of a coiled mass of tubules
What are the tubules in each testis lined with?
Diploid sperm-producing cells
Where does meiosis occur in a testis to produce sperm?
Meiosis occurs in the diploid sperm-producing cells that line the tubules to produce haploid sperm
What is produced from the diploid cells that line the tubules in a testis?
The diploid cells that line the tubules of a testis produce sperm
Is sperm haploid or diploid?
Sperm is haploid
Where is testosterone produced in a testis?
Cells located between the tubules produce the hormone testosterone
