The female is given fertility drugs in the first week if her menstrual cycle
The drugs stimulate several eggs to develop
On day 14 the eggs are surgically removed from the ovary
The eggs are mixed with sperm in a dish
Two days later the eggs are examined microscopically to see if they have developed into embryos
If embryos have formed some of the embryos are put into the uterus to allow them to implant naturally
The woman is checked regularly in the following days to ensure implantation has occurred
Once implantation is successful the pregnancy normally proceeds in the usual way
