What is the hierarchy?
The order showing the most important to the least important
What is the laity?
The congregation/parishioners. People who are part of the church but not monks, nuns or priests
What is the clergy?
Religious people who serve the church e.g. Monks, nuns priests
What is the role of the pope?
Head of the world wide Catholic Church. Chosen by cardinals.
What is the role of cardinals?
Electing the new pope. They’re chosen by the pope.
What is the role of the arch bishop?
Responsible for arch diocese
What is the role of bishops?
Responsible for diocese
What is the role of a parish priest?
Responsible for local parishes
What does magister mean in Latin?
Master
What is magisterium?
The pope and bishops are guided by the Holy Spirit to interpret the bible and tradition for Roman Catholics today, infallible
What is the ordinary magisterium?
Church teachings on the truth, includes writings from the bishop/pope. Not infallible but still authoritive
What is the extraordinary magisterium?
Cancillar and Pontifical
What is cancillar?
Where the pope calls for an ecumenical council to meet
What is pontifical?
Might involve the pope making infallible statement ex cathedra (relating to doctrine
What are four things the magisterium do?
Interpret the Bible and apostolic tradition so that we understand it within our contemporary context
Define dogmas (church teachings) in the CCC
Communicate teachings to all Bishops (consistency of teachings
Help Catholics know how to respond to ethical dilemmas
What did the word ‘catechism’ originally mean?
To teach orally

USE by the priests and bishops only
