What is a pilgrimage?
A journey that is made to religious significant places with a spiritual purpose.
What are three examples of pilgrimage sites?
Lourdes, Fatima, Rome
What is Walstingham?
A pilgrimage site in England that is visited by catholics and anglicans
When did people begin visiting pilgrimage sites?
Soon after JESUS ascension
Why did people make pilgrimages to Rome?
To see tombs of early Christian martyrs such as the first pope . Other sites were those related to saints and apostles, where Christianity grew and developed.
Why are pilgrimages made?
Pilgrimages were made as a penance for sin committee and renewal.
Why aren’t there many European places of pilgrimage?
Because the reformation destroyed many of them.
What is penance?
A punishment or act of reparation which shows repentance
What is the holy land?
The original land of Israel which is now divided between modern Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria
What is basilica?
The name given to certain long, oblong, churches granted special privileges by the pope
What does secular mean?
Concerned with the physical world rather than the spiritual.
What are four reasons pilgrimages are important?
-allow is to escape and deepens prayer life
Why are going on pilgrimages to places connected to JESUS important?
spiritually important, understand Jesus’ passion
Why is pilgrimaging to places where Marian apparition happened important?
closer to god through Mary
Why are going on pilgrimages to Places connected to early apostles important?
acknowledge/understand our Christian roots
