The lungs Flashcards
where are the lungs
in the thorax which is the top part of the body and is separated by the diaphram
what are the lungs protected by
the rib cage and they’re surounded by the pleural membranes
where does the air go when you breath in
trachea which splits into two tubes called bronchi which go into each lung
what do the bronchi split into
smaller tubes called bronchioles
what do the bronchioles have at the end of them
alveoli - where gas exchange takes place
how do alveoli carry out gas exchange in the body
the blood passing next to the alveoli has just returned to the lungs from the rest of the body so it has very little oxygen but lots of carbon dioxide
the oxygen diffuses out of the alveolus into the blood
the CO2 diffuses out of the blood into the alveolus to be breathed out
the oxygen is then released and diffuses into the body cells
the CO2 then diffuses out of the body cells into the blood back into the lungs
what is the equation for breaths oer minute
number of breaths / number of minutes
