Circulatory system - the heart Flashcards
is the heart a single circulatory system
double
what is the circulatory system made up of
the heart
blood vessels
blood
what happens in the first circuit
the right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to take in oxygen and then returns it to the heart
what happens in the second circuit
the left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood around the other organs, the blood gives up its oxygen to cells and other organs and then returns to the heart to be pumped around again
how does the heart pump blood around the body
it contracts
what are the walls mainly made up of
tissue
what do the valves do
make sure the blood is going in the right direction
what are the four chambers and how does it use them th pump blood around
right and left atrium and right and left ventricle
1 - blood flows into the two atria from the vena cava and the pulmonary vein
2 - the atria contract pushing the blood into the ventricles
3 - they contract pushing the blood into the pulmonary artery and the aorta and out the heart
4 - blood then flows to the organs through arteries and returns through the veins
5 - the atria fill again and the whole cycle starts over
what branch off around the aorta and surround the heart making sure it has all the oxygenated blood it needs
coronary arteries
what controls your heart rate
group of cells in the right atrium that act as a pacemaker
what does the ‘pacemaker’ do
produces small electric impulses that cause the muscles to contract
