Chromosomes and mitosis Flashcards
What are chromosomes and how many do we have
coiled up lengths of DNA
23 pairs / 23 from each parent
What is the cell cycle
growth and DNA replication –> mitosis –> growth and DNA replication etc
What do multicellular organisms use mitosis for
to grow or replace cells that have been damaged
What happens in a cell that isn’t dividing
the DNA is spread out in long strings
What does the cell need to do before it divides
grow and increase the amount or subcellular structures - mitochondria and ribosomes
Describe/explain mitosis
chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell
cell fibres pull them apart
membranes form around each set of chromosomes - become nuclei
cytoplasm and cell membrane divide
