the lungs Flashcards
why do you need to get oxygen into your blood stream
to supply your cells for respiration
where are your lungs
in the thorax
where is your thorax
the top part of the body
what is the thorax separated by
the lower part of your body and the diaphragm
what are the lungs surrounded by
pleural membranes
where does the air that you breath go
through the trachea
what does the trachea split into
two tubes called the bronchi
where does the bronchi go
they are split into two tubes each one called a bronchus going into each lung
what does the bronchi split into
progressively smaller tubes called bronchioles
where do bronchioles end
small bags called alveoli
what do alveoli do
carry out gas exchange in the body
what do the lungs contain
millions of air sacs called alveoli surrounded by a network of blood capillaries which is where gas exchange happens
what does the blood passing next to the alveoli contain
lots of carbon dioxide and very little oxygen
where does the oxygen diffuse out of
the alveolus into the blood
what happens when the blood reaches body cells
oxygen is released from the red blood cells and diffused into the body
