circulatory system- blood Flashcards
what is blood
blood is a tissue
what is the job of red blood cells
to carry oxygen from the lungs to all the cells in the body
what is the shape of a red blood cell
biconcave disc (like a doughnut)
what is 2 adaptations of red blood cells
the shape , has a large surface area for absorbing more oxygen
they dont have a nucleus, this allows more roon for carrying oxygen
what is the red pigment that the red blood cells contain called
haemogoblin
in the lungs what does haemogoblin bind together with to make
haemogoblin binds with oxygen to make oxyhaemogoblin
in the body tissue what happens to oxyhaemogoblin
oxyhaemogoblin splits up into haemogoblin and oxygen to release oxygen to the cells
what do white blood cells do
defend against infection
what is phagocytosis
when the white blood cell change shape to eat unwelcome micro organisms
what do other white blood cells do
produce antibodies to fight microorganisms as well as antitoxins to neutralise any toxins
what do white blood cells have that red blood cells dont
they have a nucleus
what do platelets do
help the blood to clot at a wound
what are platelets
they are small fragments of cells that dont have a nucleus
why does the blood need to clot at a wound
to stop all the blood from pouring out
what can a lack of platelets lead to
excessive bleeding and bruising
