The List Exam 3 Flashcards
Enterobius vermicularis
Euk. Diploid fungus.
Human body. Intestines, colon, mouth.
Can be pathogenic if immunity is lowered.
Skin and mucosae, sometimes lungs, blood heart, can be negatively affected.
Schizosaccharomyces
pombe
Rod shaped unicellular eukaryote
Sugar containing fermentations of alcohol.
East Africa Beer
harmless
Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Globular shaped fungi. Yeast
Alcohol and bread production.
Not normally a pathogen. Can cause flu like symptoms in very immunocompromised.
Model organism
Rhizopus spp
Plant fungus, sometimes animal parasite.
Jellies, syrups
Some are opportunistic agents of human fungal infections
Complication of diabetic ketoacidosis
Penicillium sp.
fungi
Food and drug production.
Antibiotics. Kills/inhibits growth of certain bacteria in body
Coccidioides immitis
Fungus. Saprophytic and parasitic. Soil mold.
Spores easily airborne, few spore required for infection. Becomes a multinucleated sperule in host, not a yeast. Leukocyte respone in host
Lung infection in 60% of infected
Flu like symtpoms in other 40%
Aspergillus spp
Molds. Asexual
Some can infect humans: ear, skin lesions, ulcers
Microbial fermentation: alcohol production
Citric acid
Histoplasma capsulatum
Asexual fungal pathogen.
Asymptomatic to fatal. Lung disease (Histoplamosis/Darlings disease)
Soil and mammal hosts.
Severity depends on individual immune system
Flu like symtoms
Plasmodium falciparum
Protozoan parasite
Malaria
Female mosquitos are vectors
Giardia lamblia
Found by Van Leeunwenhoek in his diarrhea. 2 nuclei
G. lambila infection, severe diarrhea, malnutrition, weightloss, intestinal epithelial injury
Trichomonas vaginalis
Parasitic protozoan
Infects urogenital tract of men and women
Non-virally transmitted disease… very widespread
Invades mucosa, leads to inflammation
More common in women because men are asymptomatic
Leishmania donovani
Single celled parasitic protozoa
Transmitted by sandflies. Visceral leishmaniasis. Destroys host cells, enlargement of target organs, prolonged fever, decreased appitite, weightloss, enlargement of spleen and liver, cough, diarrhea, infected lymph nodes, chronic kidney disease.
Trypanosoma cruzi
Protozoa
Chagas disease, spread through insects.
Digestive problems
Weakening of heart muscles
Trypanosoma brudei
Parasitic eukaryote
Insect vector and mammalian host in blood African Sleeping sickness once it gets to CNS Demyelination due to autoimmune response Swelling of lymph nodes Headaches, fevers, chancers, rashes, seizures, coma, death
Entamoeba histolytica
Parasitic protozoa
Insects and digestive tract of humans and primates. Amebiasis disease
Diarrhea and abdomical pain. Sometimes amebic dysentery (stomach pain, blood and mucus in feces, fever)
