-SVPs a catholic charity with 600,000 members around the world who work locally
-inspired by St Vincent de Paul, a priest who abandoned his career to work with the poor in France in the 1600s.
Founded 1833 in Paris to put faith into action
Anyone in need is a brother or sister to a christian. (Think of the good Samaritian)

A

-former slave trader kills his brother. He felt so guilty that he works amongst his slaves, carrying a heavy load which represents his past. One slave releases the load from him, showing forgiveness.
-European priests convert natives to Christianity and then fight to protect them from slave traders
“No one has greater love than this to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13)

May told Bernadette to dig in the ground, and when she did a spring appeared
The waters of the spring are believed to have healing powers, and Catholics visit Lourdes to bathe in it’s waters

Church is the body of Christ and must be one body. All Churches or Diocese are part of the Church. At the last supper, Jesus prayed that his followers “may all be one”.

Today’s Popes and Bishops are successors to the 12 apostles

Jesus gave his 12 authority to lead the Church - this apostolic authority is passed on to all Bishops (by laying on of hands)

Authority of Peter passed to Popes by Jesus

Combined authority called the magisterium

When the Pope makes a formal declaration he can declare it infallible - it cannot be wrong
