The Kidneys p2 Flashcards
Why is urea found in urine
Ammonia is a waste product which is toxic so it’s converted to urea in the liver. Then urea is transported in the kidneys where it is filtered out of blood in urine
Why are sodium ions found in urine
Ions are taken into the body in food and absorbed into the blood. The right balance of ions is maintained by the kidneys and it is reabsorbed into the blood after filtration and the rest is removed from the body in urine
How is water balanced in the body
By the amount we consume and amount removed by kidneys in urine
What hormone controls concentration of urine
Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH)
What controls water content
Negative feedback
What happens if kidneys do not work properly
Waste substances buildup and lose ability to control levels of ions and water resulting in death
How can you treat kidney failure
Dialysis treatment or kidney transplant
What do dialysis machines do
Filter blood
Why is protein not found in the urine of a healthy person
Molecules are too large so can’t pass through membrane
What do you lose from the lungs when breathing out
Water
What is a hormone
A Chemical messenger made by Endocrine system and is released into the blood
More advantages of sexual reproduction
Natural selection
Many offspring so more will survive
Which type of cell does not have 2 sex chromosomes
