Plants p2 Flashcards
What is auxin
It is a plant growth or hormone near the tips of shoots and roots
What happens when a shoot grows towards light
When a shoot tip is exposed to light more auxin is on the side of shade than side of the light making cells elongate faster on the shaded side so the shoot bends towards the light
What happens when shoots grow away from gravity
When cheaters growing sideways gravity produces more auxin on the lower side causing it to grow faster and the shoot bends upwards
What happens when A root grows towards gravity
The roots growing sideways will have more auxin on its lower side but in a root the extra auxin inhibits growth meaning cells on top elongate faster and root bends downwards
What happens if the tip of a shoot is removed
No auxin is produced
What happens if there is extra auxin
It promotes growth in shoot but inhibits growth in root
Investigating plant growth practical control variables
Number of seeds type of seed temperature water light intensity
What hormone is used to make sure a flower grows in time
Gibberellin
What is rooting powder
Contains auxin and helps to grow from cuttings
What’s is ethene
Gas produced by ageing plants. It stimulates enzymes which causes fruit to ripen and it can speed up ripening
What is tissue culture used to grow
Clones
What is gravitropism
Growth of a plant in response to gravity
