Eyes And Brain p2 Flashcards
Myopia
Shortsighted use glasses with a concave lens to correct it
Hyperopia
Longsighted use glasses with a convex lens to correct it
Sclera
Tough supporting wall of eye
Iris
Contains muscles that control the diameter of pupil therefore how much light enters the eye
Ciliary muscles and suspensory ligaments
Controls shape of the lens
Optic nerve
Carries impulses from the receptors on the retina to the brain
Retina
The lens focuses light on it
Contact lenses
Thin lenses that sit on surface of eye
Laser eye surgery
Vaporises tissue or changes shape of cornea to improve eyesight
Replacement lens surgery
Artificial lens made of clear plastic is put in place of natural lens
Cerebral cortex
The wrinkly outer bit responsible for consciousness and intelligence memory and language
Cerebellum
Responsible for muscle coordination
Medulla
Responsible for unconscious activities like breathing and your heartbeat
What does the eye do in bright light
Pupil gets smaller muscles in Iris contract radial muscles relax. This reduces amount of light entering the eye
What does the eye do in dim light
Circular muscles in Iris relax and radial muscles contract which makes the pupil widen.
