The Immune System Flashcards
What is the MAC
Membrane attack complex. Inactive proteins that circulate in the blood and activate when bound to microbes. Cascade into multi unit and disrupts membrane.
What are interferons?
Proteins that inhibit viral replication
T cells mature where?
In the thymus
What do helper T cells do
Regulate activity of other T cells
What do memory T cells do
Remember and are ready to respond
What are the cytotoxic cells?
Killer T cells
What do suppressor T cells do?
Call off attack after infection is healed.
Where do B cells mature?
In the bone marrow.
What do plasma cells produce?
Antibodies
What do memory B cells do?
Maintain a record of antibody production
What do lymphocytes do?
Contribute to immunological memory. Enhance response to a foreign molecule encountered previously.
What is an antigen?
A foreign molecule that elicits a response by binding to receptors of lymphocytes.
How long does it take for the body to produce antibodies in the 1 degree response?
10-17 days
How long does it take the 2 degree response to fight infection
2-7 days
