The Human Excretory System Flashcards
How do we gain water in the body?
Drinking, respiration, eating
How do we lose water in the body?
Sweating, weeing, breathing
What do the kidneys do?
Involved with eliminating waste and osmoregulation control of water potential in the blood.
What are the small soluble substances in our blood?
Amino acids, urea, glucose, ions, water, plasma
What do small soluble substances do in the blood?
They are filtered out.
What are the large substances in the blood?
Erythrocytes (RBC)
Leucocytes (WBC)
Hormones
Thrombocytes (Platelets)
Plasma proteins
What do large substances do in the blood?
Stay in the blood
What is ultrafiltration?
Filters the blood under high pressure, small soluble substances: glucose, ions and water are forced out the blood, dissolve in the blood. Large molecules such as as RBC, WBC, Platelet stays in the blood
What is selective reabsorption?
Useful substances are selectively reabsorbed, all the glucose and ions, toxic urea and excess ions are removed in the urine.
Where are nephrons found?
Positioned across the cortex and medulla of the kidney.
