Nerves and Reflexes Flashcards
What two parts make up the central nervous system?
- brain
- spinal cord
What is the role of the CNS?
Coordinating our response to a stimulus
What two types of cells are found in the Peripheral Nervous System?
- sensory neurone
- motor neurone
(Schwann cells)
What is the role of the sensory neurones?
Detect and send information about the environment to the brain.
What is the role of the motor neurones?
Carry messages from the brain to the body’s muscles and glands allowing for movement and other functions.
What is a stimulus?
Change in environment, to then react to. Anything able to sense.
What is a reflex?
An involuntary reaction as the brain is not initially involved.
At the junction between the neurone is a small gap called a … Here chemicals called … diffuse across the gap to pass messages onto the next …
- synapse
- neurotransmitter
- neurone
What happens when the eye is exposed to a light?
The pupils constrict (shrink) to prevent retinal damage.
