the heart Flashcards
what is the atrium
thinwalled, receives blood and pumps into ventricle
what is a ventricle
thick-walled, pumps blood into lungs(pulmonary circuit), and to the rest of the body (systemic circuit)
what are the four valves in the heart
pulmonary valve, aortic valve, triscupid valve, bicuspid (mitral) valve
what is the path of blood through the heart
- deoxygenated bloods enters right atrium from superior and inferior vena cava
- blood is pumped into right venticle
- into pulmonary vein into left atrium
- left atrium to the left ventricle
- left ventricle to the aorta then to the rest of the body
why is the left ventricle more muscular than the right ventricle
because it must pump blood to the whole body
what are the two stages blood pumping occurs in
- diastole
- systole
what is the stage diastole
atria relax and fill with blood- this relaxation of heart is diastole
what is the stage systole
ventricles contract forcefully pushing blood into aorta and pulmonary artery
what makes the lubb sound
as ventricles contract, blood pressure increases in ventricles, slamming shut biscupid and triscupid valves
what makes the dubb sound
as ventricles relax after systole, pressure decreases in ventricles and aortic and pulmonary valves snap shut
what kind of person has high stroke volume and what does this mean
- fit people
- cardiovascular excersise enlarges the ventricles and increases their distensibility or stretchiness ( the ability to hold more blood)
