3 domains Flashcards
(domains ans kingdoms)
What’s the six kingdoms
Animalia
Plantae
Protista
Fungi
Bacteria
Archaea
What three kingdoms are classified as domains
Bacteria
Archaea
Eukarya
What is animalia
Eukaryotic
No cell walls
Heterotrophic
Multicellular
Motile
Examples: mammals birds reptiles
What is plantae
Eukaryotic
Cell walls
Autotrophic
Multicellular
What is Protista
Eukaryotic
Some are heterotrophs
Some autotrophs
Typically leftovers that don’t fit cleanly into other kingdom’s
Tend to be microscopic and single cellular but can live in colonies
What is fungi
Eukaryotic
Heterotroph
Mostly multicellular
What is bacteria
Prokaryotic
Microscopic
Single cellular
What is archaea
Prokaryotic
Anaerobic bacteria
Live in very extreme environments
What are the three species concepts
Morphological species
Biological species
Phylogenetic species
What is the morphological species concept
How similar organisms are
Advantage: simplistic
Disadvantage: how much variation is too much
What is the biological species concept
The ability to produce fertile offspring
Advantage: widely accepted
Disadvantage: can’t be applied to extinct species, hard to test, cannot he used with asexual species
What is the phylogenetic species concept
Focus on evolutionary relationships and histories, a species is defined as a cluster of organisms that shows relationship within the cluster and distinct from other clusters
Advantage: can be applied to extinct species, using DNA analysis
Disadvantage: evolutionary histories not known for all animals
What is taxonomy
The science that classifies and names living things
What are prokaryotes
Smallest simplest life form
Lack true nucleus
Genetic material is single cellular chromosome
Asexual reproduction
No membrane bound organelles
Many are anaerobic
What are eukaryotes
Complicated life form
Have a membrane bound nucleus
Genetic material is made up of multiple chromosomes
Sexual reproduction is common
Mostly multicellular
Most are aerobic
Membrane bound organelles present
