What occurred in the years 1927-9?
A shift in economic policy known as The Great Turn
What were the problems of the economy?
Industry badly impacted by CW and WW1
Any recovery was slow and patchy
Production weakened by strikes, inefficient management and low level production
Problems linked to agriculture as peasants were not producing as much food for workers
Reasons for the Great Turn?
Serious weakness in industrial management, low efficiency and quality of goods
Drive towards industrialisation too slow- a country not industrialised was weak
NEP failing to produce growth that was expected
USSR wanted to increase military strength so it didn’t rely on foreign imports
Socialism would only be achieved when majority of population was workers
Stalin’s attitude changed he became more radical and confident to express his ideas as his power was more secure
Why would RW Davies agree with S decision to enforce the Great Turn?
“NEP saved economy from disaster in the beginning but had changed by late 1920’s and couldn’t provide the framework for large scale industrialisation
What was the impact of The Great Turn?
Began an economic and social revolution
Major impact on debates and power struggle within party
1929- clash of opinion between B and S saw ending of NEP
