When there is no specific individual that is the obvious choice to become leader

Before Lenin’s death after his first stroke in 1922

Worked on the basis of his personality and authority, he had respect from fellow leaders as he masterminded the revolution and government
What was collective leadership?
Where there is a government not dominated by one single person, a Marxist idea supported by Lenin
What was the issue when it came to collective leadership?
Lenin did dominate the government successfully and it was difficult to imagine the future without one single leader
Who’s support was vital when it came to gaining power?
You needed support from the politburo- the most powerful government. It was a battle for support within the party not the Soviet Union

What and when and why was the troika?
The troika was an alliance between Stalin, Kamenev, and Zinoviev with the prime aim of fighting Trotsky and his aims- formed in April 1923.
How did people view Stalin when the Troika was first formed?
He was underrated and unpopular
Who was in favour of collective leadership?
Those who feared that Trotsky would emerge as leader
What happened to the Troika in 1924-25?
Kamenev and Zinoviev broke away in favour of supporting Trotsky and the left opposition
