What was the first 5 year plan?
Introduced by Stalin in 1928, involving centralised planning and systematic targets
What were the main aims of the 5 year plan?
Develop heavy industry- coal, oil, steel, iron and machinery
Boost overall production by 300%
Improve transport e.g. the railways
Transform economy and society by electrification- generate x6 more power
Feed the increasing workers population
Why were the targets set ambitious?
To maximise effort by managers to fulfill 5 year plan
How did propaganda help 5 year plan?
Used to boost enthusiasm as it presented predictions of grandiose future success
What was there to be a huge investment in?
Infrastructure, in particular the railways
Plans made for a “steel city” and tractor factories
Why did Stalin want a 5 year plan?
He believed Russia was 100 years behind GB and USA but could catch up in 10 years
He feared an invasion from Germany so military strength had to increase
Wanted to assert power- believed he had more ambition than Lenin
What did members of party think of FFYP?
They were pleased with the commitment of S for a radical socialism change
What were urban workers thinking?
They hoped for better job prospects and living standards
What did poor and middle peasants think?
Hoped to benefit from a land reform
What was a criticism of FFYP?
Harsh collectivisation would anger Kulaks and decrease grain production
Central planning was not convincing and was a high gamble risk
