Who was the book written for?
The book was written for gentile readers, not just Jews, so other religions can read the bible too.
Who specifically was it written for?
Theophilus
Who wrote the gospel?
We don’t know, but they also wrote the book of Acts.
Who was Luke?
A physician that traveled around with Paul but he doesn’t know about the letters that Paul wrote.
When was Luke written?
70-90 CE and they think it was written in Ephesus.
What is the main theme?
Kingdom ethic - everything will change
List the main themes:
- Holy Spirit - controls the agenda
- Prayer - Jesus is connected to God through prayer
- Role of Women - women are included in everything
- Disenfranchised - accepts social outcasts
- Universal - Jesus is for everyone, not just the Jews
- Lawful - Christianity was not a threat to Rome. (Pax Romana: the peace of Rome)
- Savior - wants to prove that Jesus is the savior to deliver them from sin.
How was John brought into this life?
Zechariah was his father and Elizabeth was his mother. At first Elizabeth was barren but when they prayed and an angel showed up saying that they will have a son but he can never drink wine because he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. Zechariah questioned how the angel knew that and the angel claimed that he was Gabriel and then made him mute until John was born.
How is Jesus brought into this life?
The same angel shows up to Mary and tells her that she will have Jesus but she questions it because she is a virgin, but the angel doesn’t punish her. Instead Mary accepts it and says here am I.

What does Luke refer to Jesus as?
The savior so it can be universal.
Who was Simeon?
He was righteous and devout and the Holy Spirit rested upon him. He needed to see Jesus before he passed on so he went and visited him, held him, and praised God.
Who was Prophet Anna?
She was a prophet that never left the temple and was very devout and started praying to God about how Jesus can give Jerusalem redemption.
Who does Luke trace Jesus back to?
Luke traces Jesus back to Adam. Adam is easier to connect to everyone while Abraham only connects with the Jews.
What does Luke have that’s similar to Matthew?
The Sermon at the Plain.
