What was the estates general?
A general assembly representing the three main groups of France, the clergy, nobility and the commoners.
When was the estates general called and how long had it been since it was last called?
May 5th 1789, it had been 175 years.
What was the main issue with the estates general?
The third estate (commoners) made up 98% of all people but could be outvoted by the other two bodies.
How did the third estate aim to fix the problem with the system?
Making a vote by head system rather than by status.

The national assembly vowed not to disperse until constitutional reform was achieved.

A revolutionary assembly which was formed by representatives of the third estate.

The period after the reign of terror when the French people revolted against it’s excesses.
How did the revolution end in 1799?
Napoleon staged a coup abolishing the directory and appointing himself France’s first consul.
