What is the Francis report?
- ‘Too great a degree of Tolerance of Poor standards and they must be protected from avoidable harm’
- Revealed appalling care of dependent older adults within NHS foundation Trust
- Abuse and neglect
- Not isolated incident
- Resistance to change
- Resulted in hospitals and trusts being on special measures
What are some challenges of the ageing population?
- Living longer but often with poor health leading to diseased old age
- Polypharmacy
- Dementia
- Lower levels of e-dentulous patients
- More patients, more complex dentistry, more complex MH and SH , are enough dentists
Common oral disease in elderly population?
- Caries/ root caries
- Periodontal disease
- Oral mucosal disorders
- Oral cancers
How can aspiration Pneumonia occur in elderly?
- Having a dirty mouth can be fatal
- Oral bacteria is main source of infection for aspiration pneumonia
- Poor oral health = increased bacterial load = increased risk of aspiration pneumonia
- Improved oral health reduces risk
How is staphylococcal mucositis related to aspiration pneumonia?
- Lack of oral care in mouth
- Build up of dead mucosal cells, dried mucous and salivary secretions
- Demonstrated Staph Aureus
- Seen during COVID-19 in intubated pt
What are the UN Convention of Human rights related to patient safety?

- Eating
- Comfort

What does loss of teeth relate to?
- Impaired masticatory function
- Avoidance of foods that are hard to chew
- Not meeting nutritional needs
- Increased intake of processed, high cholesterol and lipid based foodstuffs
How is caring for the elderly not business friendly?
- Domiciliary dentistry
- Arranging transport to dental clinic
- Longer appointments
- Failed appointments
- Is our current workforce big enough to meet the need?
