What is overweight and obesity?
A
- Abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health

What is a bariatric person?
A
- Individual of any age (child or adult) who has limitations in health and social care due to physical size, health, mobility and environmental access

What is BMI?
A
- Body mass Index
- Weight in Kg divided by square of height in meters
- Most useful population level measure

What are some limitations to BMI?
A
- Doesn’t assess body fat distribution
- Does not account for factors like age, sex, ethnicity and muscle mass

What are some contributing factors to obesity?
A
- Underlying health problems like hypothyroidism in downs syndrome
- Lack of energy
- Difficulty with chewing or swallowing food
- Medications
- RA/ cerebral palsy
- Lifestyle factors like lack of healthy food choices

Does the Equality Act 2010 consider obesity as a disability?
A
- No
- But recognises conditions associated with obesity may lead to disability

What is the role of the dental team in bariatric care?
A
- Identify and diagnose oral health issues ass with bariatric pt
- Signpost to appropriate services e.g. weight management
- Predisposition to dental disease
- Refer to secondary and tertiary care
- Raise concerns with pt, parents or carers of vulnerable adults and children
