A

Located in Czechoslovakia
was originally a originally a walled city and fort (Gavrilo Princip held here), served as a “model camp”

  • was the model camp that was shown to foreigners
  • operated from nov 1940 - may 1945
  • less than 20k survived
  • prisoners were not tattooed for identification but instead given a metal identity badge worn around necks for the use of propoganda
  • The camp was mainly designed as a slave labor camp (prisoners were forced to work) and a transit camp (prisoners were sent here for a short time before being sent to death camps further east)
  • The Jews had to choose their own leaders to run the ghetto according to Nazi demands

Political prisoners such as ,Roma and sinti, soviet civiliians, jehovah’s witnesses, jews, homosexuals were sent here.
-forced labour
-gass chamber disguised as showers
-STALINS SON Yakov Dzhugashvili DIED AT THIS CAMP AND STALIN REFUSED TO MAKE A DEAL TO RELEASE HIS SON IN EXCHANGE FOR THE RELEASE OF A GERMAN GENERAL PAULUS.

the jews going into terezin did not know about death camps but knew about work camps
Marianka fought the evil nazis by singing them a song about the all knowing god and how one day he will pass judgement

  • They had to run 40km a day for labor
  • Neck shot facilities- shot from behind without knowing and was cheap and less torturous for the guards
  • In concentration Camps all prisoners had a # and a marking in form of a colored triangle to represent rank

International Red Cross visit to Terezin. Why was this visit important? How did the Germans hide what was actually going on?

A

The visit was important as the Germans did not want people to know about ghettos, death camps and what they were doing to Jews so they hid what was going on by staging the place as a cultural/educational retreat
