The chain of freindship was the alliances formed before ww1. Such as the Triple entente France, Britain, Russia and the Triple Alliance: Germany, Italy, Austria Hungary.. The Chain represented how different countries had each others backs. Meaning, if one went to war, the others would help them. These alliances leaded to WW1 because a dispute between Austria-Hungary and serbia ended up dragging all the other countries in because they had to fulfill their promise.
