The face Flashcards
Which muscles in the head are trigeminal?
Any muscle that starts with “T”
Buccal Nerve
One sensory, one motor. From different CN but adjacent in body.
What house the upper teeth?
Maxilla
What houses the lower teeth?
Mandible
Where is the stylomastoforamen?
Between styloid and mastoid process.
Facial nerve leaves here to inervate posterior belly of digastric and stylohyoid
Prterrion
Region where frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid join. Located just behind the temple. Weakest part of skull. Middle meningeal artery runs underneath easily ruptured.
What muscle rings the eye?
Orbicularis Oculi. Not only allows for facial expression but also allows squinting of eyes - important in lubricating cornea.
What muscle rings mouth?
Orbicularis Oris.
Pucker muscle for kissing.
Fronwing muscle?
Frontali - wrinkles brow
What muscle prevents food from falling in vestibule of oral cavity?
Buccinator stops food from falling into space outside teeth by pressing into teeth
4 Muscles of mastication?
Temporalis Muscles - elevates mandible / closes jaw
Masseter Muscle
Medial Pterygoid
Later Pterygoid
How many muscles to open and close jaw?
One to Open, 3 to close. Lateral pterygoid opens.
Nerve supply to face?
- Motor - C.N. V and C.N. VII
- Sensory - C.N. V
- Parasympathetics - C.N. VII and C.N. IX
Which cranial nerve is trigeminal?
V - “Great sensory nerve of face”
Motor function such as biting and chewing.
Largest cranial nerve
Which Cranial nerve is facial
VII
3 major branches of CN V?
- Ophthalmic nerve - ONLY SENSORY
- Maxillary nerve - ONLY SENSORY
- Mandibular nerve - MOTOR AND SENSORY
What do also sensory nerves have?
Dorsal root of spinal nerve have ganglion outside spinal cord
Where does the maxillary nerve run?
Towards maxilla through infraorbital canal under eye
Branches of facial nerve (CN7)?
"Ten zebras bought my car" Temporal Zygomatic Buccal Mandibular Cervical
Important facial artery?
External Corotid - 3 Branches
- Facial - mandible - asastamoses with ophthalmic
- Superficial temporal
- Maxillary artery - dives behind mandible to deep face
Middle meningeal artery
Off maxillary branch of external corotid artery into skull to supply Dura
The is artery that is easily damaged in pterrion!
Inferior alveolar artery
Runs with same nerve supplying mandible and teeth arriving at chin with mental nerve
What does lymphatic drainage follow?
Venous Drainage. Follows bottom sides of skull to lower mandible
Where does the maxillary artery enter the pterygopalatine fossa?
Pterygomaxillary tissue
