✅The Ear Flashcards
Where does the structure of the ear sit?
In the temporal bone
What are the two parts of the outer ear?
Pinna
Auricle
What does the outer ear work as?
A transmitter/receiver that can direct the flow of air particles.
What does the external auditory meatus contain?
Glands which produce wax
What is the external auditory meatus surrounded by?
Surrounded by cartilage initially then bone
What does the external auditory meatus filter?
Dust and bugs
What is the main thing that the external auditory meatus do?
It amplifies sound wave.
-particularly those with high frequency sounds.
How long is the external auditory meatus?
2 1/2 cm long, curved, uphill.
Where does the external auditory meatus end?
At the ear drum
What is the ear drum called?
The Tympanic membrane
Describe the features of the ear drum?
Very thin
Layer of skin
Layer of mucous membrane
Layer of fibrous tissue
What vibrations occur with different frequencies?
Low frequencies- all of the drum vibrates
High frequencies- only certain parts vibrate
What is sound?
A series of vibrations
What is the middle ear called?
The tympanic cavity
Where does the auditory tube flow to?
Naso-pharynx
What are the 3 ossicles in the middle ear?
Malleus- hammer
Incus- Anvil
Stape- Stirrup
What do the ossicles do?
They can stop or calm vibration
They also increase movement so that there is enough sound to transform into inner ear
What are the two muscles of the inner ear?
The tensor tympani
The stapedius
What do these muscles do?
Manage the reduction of vibration
What does the tensor tympani do?
Reduces movement when chewing so we cannot hear it.
What doe the stirrup go to?
Oval window
What is the inner ear known as?
The bony labyrinth
What are the two sections of the inner ear?
Cochlear
Vestibule
Describe 3 things about the semi-circular canals
Fluid-contained
Hair cells
Signals head movement
What happens when the oral window vibrates?
It disrupts fluid in cochlea
What happens when fluid in the cochlea is disrupted?
Results in vibration in floor Of the cochlear ( Bailar membrane) which attaches to the organ of Corti (rows of hair cells)
