The Digestive System Flashcards
State some points about the liver
- it produces a green-yellowish liquid called bile
- bile does not contain enzymes
- it’s stores excess glucose
- it breaks down proteins into urea
- it breaks down harmful substances such as alcohol and drugs
State some points about the gullet / oesophagus
- the muscles of the gullet wall contract and relax to push the food down into the stomach
- no enzymes are produced here
State some points about the mouth and salivary glands
- the teeth are used to break down large pieces of food into smaller pieces
- the salivary glands secrete saliva
- saliva contains enzymes that digests starch
- The tounge rolls the food into the gullet
What are the parts of the digestive system
- mouth
- gullet / oesophagus
- stomach
- small intestine
- large intestine
- rectum and anus
State some points about the stomach
- it is a muscular sac
- it mashes up food into a liquid mixture
- it produces a digestive juice that contains acid and enzymes
- the acid kills the bacteria in food
- the enzymes helps to digest protiens
- the food later leaves bit by bit into the small intestine
what are some points about the small intestine
- it receives the digested food from the pancreas and bile from the gall bladder
- it also receives digestive enzymes
- different enzymes in the small intestine helps to speed up digestion of nutrients until the food is completely digested
- the digested food is absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the blood stream and carried to all parts of the body
- digestion stops here
what are some points about the gall bladder
- bile which is produced by the liver is stored in the gall bladder
- it releases bile into the small intestine
what are some points about the pancreas
- it produces enzymes that digests carbohydrates , protein and fats
- it also releases some enzymes into the small intestine
what are some points about the large intestine
- no digestion happens here
- excess water , vitamins and mineral salts are absorbed through the walls of the large intestine and into the blood stream
- the undigested food moves to the rectum and anus
what are some points about the rectum and anus
- the digested food is stored in the rectum
- the faeces leaves the body through the anus
- no digestion occurs here
what is faeces
faeces refers to the undigested food
what is the digestive system
it is the physical way of digesting food by breaking down large pieces of food into smaller and simpler pieces
which of the 3 parts does the food not go through
liver , gall bladder and pancreas
