Keeping healthy Flashcards
What will happen if we eat too much convenience food / fast food
It can cause kidney problems, high blood pressure because it is high in fat and salts and can also cause diabetes
What happens if we stare at our computers too long without a break
It can destroy our eye site
It causes pain on our wrists, back, arms and shoulders
If there is a lack of physical activity it can cause health problems such as diabetes, the person that Will be obsese and high blood pressure
What happens when we do not finish the anitibiotics we are given when we are sick
The bacteria will not be completely destroyed and it will multiply, coming back stronger
What happens when we do not clean kitchen work spaces regularly
The microorganisms will not be destroyed completely and will be a danger to our health
What happens when we listen to loud music
The vibrations will destroy our eardrums and we won’t be able to hear clearly or properly
It can also cause deafness
What are the 3 ways to keep ourselves healthy
- sleep at least 8 hours a day
- exercise regularly
- eat healthily with all the recommended nutritions
How to maintain a healthy weight
Eat a balanced diet with the right amounts of nutrients
What happens to one who overeats
They will be taking in more energy than needed
The extra energy will be stored as fats
This causes weight gain and the person will be obese
What happens to one who over exercises and over dieting
- can cause our joints to overwork and can cause injury to our muscles and joints
- it deprives the body of nutrients and it allows the person to suffer malnutrition
What are the health risks of over dieting and over exercising
- hair loss
- infertility
- oestroporosis
- heart failure
- Low blood pressure
- Low tolerance to cold
- death
- stroke
- lack of energy
What are diseases caused by
- Bacterial and viral infections
- inheritance
What are viruses and bacteria
They are part of the tiny organisms called microorganisms
They are too small to see
What can viruses and bacteria cause
Diseases and servers illness
What are some diseases caused by bacteria
- sore throat
- tuberculosis
- urinary tract infections
- syphills
- gonorrhoea
What are some diseases caused by viruses
- chicken pox
- AIDS
- Flu ( influenza )
- SARS
What are anti microbial agents
They are substances that prevents the growth and also kills microorganisms
What are the 3 types of anti microbial agents
- Antiseptics
- Disinfectants
- Antibiotics
What are antiseptics
These are chemical substances that are applied on living surfaces like skin to prevent the growth of microorganisms
( eg. prevents bacteria and fungi )
What are disinfectants
It is chemicals that are used on non living surfaces to prevent the growth of microorganisms
What are antibiotics
Antibodies are injected or is taken orally to kill microorganisms and prevent it from growing
What are vaccinations
Vaccinations help to prevent diseases that are caused by viruses
What are hereditary diseases
Hereditary diseases are passed down from one generation to the next
What are the causes of hereditary diseases
The mutant of the genes
What are the 3 examples of hereditary diseases
- thalassemia
- sickle cell anaemia
- colour blindness
What is sickle cell anaemia
It is a gene controlling haemoglobin in red blood cells at the birth of a child
What are the results of the sickle cell
This results in the formation of red blood cells that are sickle shaped
what is the difference between sickel red blood cells versus normal red blood cells
the sickel blood cell does not carry as much oxygen than normal red blood cells
what does sickel blood cell do
it cannot move smoothly through the blood cells
it can cause blockages in the blood vessels
it will not obtain sufficient oxygen
what is thalassemia
it is a hereiditary disease that is passed on from parents to their young
what does thalassemia involve
it involves the mutation of the gene that makes haemoglobin and it causes red blood cells to be destroyed
what does anaemic
it means one that is suffering from thalassemia does not have enough blood
what does anaemic result in
it results in the low level of haemoglobin and low count of red blood cells
what is colour blindess
it is one of the most common hereiditary diseases that the colour vision is controlled by the gene
what happens when the gene for our colour vision is damaged or have gone missing
these are special cells and if it is damaged or destroyed, the colour vision will be missing and will make the person color blind
